Lymphoedema and your skin

NAQI communication

Lymphoedema results from the malfunctioning of the lymphatic system. The cause may be genetic predisposition or the result of damaged or clogged lymphatic vessels as in e.g. radiotherapy during cancer treatment. This can lead to swelling, feeling heavy and sometimes pain in the limbs. But did you know that lymphoedema also has a major impact on the condition of your skin? When your lymphatic system is not working optimally, your skin becomes more fragile, drier and susceptible to infections. Therefore, proper skin care and good skin hygiene is essential to keep your skin healthy and supple.

The impact of lymphoedema on your skin

Lymphoedema causes waste products and fluids to be drained less effectively. The lymphatic fluid accumulates in the skin, causing it to become rigid, hard and thickened. This can easily cause fissures, irritations and even wounds. Moreover, the skin becomes more susceptible to dehydration as it is stretched and can tear. As a result, the skin loses its protective function against external influences, which can lead to an increased risk of fungal and bacterial infections, causing additional discomfort and health risks.

" Dry and fragile skin requires gentle and effective care that helps to restore and strengthen the skin barrier. But what should you look out for when choosing the right products? "

The right skin care: deep skin repair and protection

The skin consists of several layers, with the epidermis playing a crucial role in retaining moisture and warding off harmful external influences. With lymphoedema, this natural protection becomes disrupted, leading to an increased risk of dehydration and irritation. It is therefore important to actively support the skin with moisturising and barrier-repairing care and maintain good skin hygiene:

  • Gentle cleansing for an intact skin barrier. Skin suffering from lymphoedema is especially susceptible to drying out by harsh cleansing products. NAQI® Body Soap is a soap-free, pH-neutral washing emulsion that cleanses the skin without affecting its natural balance and oils. By using mild, skin-friendly ingredients, this gentle soap-free skin cleanser prevents irritation and supports the skin's natural moisture balance.

  • Intensive hydration and restoration of skin structure. Dry skin requires active hydration and restoration of the skin barrier. NAQI® Body Care contains a unique structure that mimics the function of lipids in the skin. This strengthens the natural barrier, improving moisture retention 3,4 and restoring the skin's suppleness and firmness. In addition, the formula contains humectants, which ensure that moisture is retained in the skin, keeping it hydrated for a long time. With regular use, the skin becomes stronger, less prone to irritation and more resistant to external stressors.

  • Protection against friction and external stressors. In lymphoedema, protection against friction and pressure points is essential, especially when wearing compression stockings and bandages. The NAQI® Body Screen is an innovative barrier cream specially developed to protect the skin from friction and irritation caused by mechanical stress of skin or textiles against the skin. The cream forms a breathable, non-sealing layer that prevents the skin from being irritated by constant pressure
